Compatibility

Amano Shrimp are peaceful and thrive alongside small, non-aggressive community fish such as tetras, rasboras, otocinclus and corydoras.

Growing to around 5–6 cm, they are larger than most dwarf shrimp and are less vulnerable to predation, making them suitable for a wider range of community aquariums.

They are widely regarded as one of the most effective freshwater algae eaters, constantly grazing on hair algae, biofilm and leftover food throughout the day to help keep planted aquariums clean.

Unlike Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp do not successfully breed in freshwater, helping maintain a stable population without the risk of overbreeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Amano Shrimp eat hair algae?

Yes. Amano Shrimp are one of the most effective freshwater shrimp for controlling hair algae, biofilm and soft algae. They work best as part of a balanced aquarium maintenance routine.

How many Amano Shrimp should I keep?

Amano Shrimp are social and do best in groups. We recommend keeping at least 3–5 shrimp, with larger groups providing even better algae control in bigger aquariums.

Can Amano Shrimp live with Cherry Shrimp?

Yes. Amano Shrimp are peaceful and make excellent tank mates for Cherry Shrimp and other Neocaridina species, as well as most peaceful community fish.

Do Amano Shrimp breed in freshwater?

No. Although females may carry eggs, the larvae require brackish water to develop, so Amano Shrimp do not reproduce successfully in freshwater aquariums.

What fish can live with Amano Shrimp?

Amano Shrimp are suitable for peaceful community aquariums with fish such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, otocinclus and other small, non-aggressive species.
